Here at BDS Architecture, we recently shared some top tips to maximise light and brighten a dark room (if you haven’t yet checked out these tips, click here). These ideas, such as decorating with light colours and using mirrors to reflect light around the room, can really make a huge difference to the look and feel of your home, but they’re not the only options. In fact, there are actually even more ways to maximise light and make your home feel more open, airy, and spacious, and we’re going to show you how.
Here are 4 more tricks to maximise light and brighten a dull, dark room:

1. Add Internal Glazing
So far, we’ve focused on ways to increase both artificial light and natural light, but it’s also worthwhile looking at how to make use of the light that’s already in your home. If you have one room that is particularly dark, think about ‘borrowing’ light from a brighter room by adding internal glazing; glass windows from one room to another.
2. Choose Furniture Wisely
When it comes to decorating, the choice of material you choose for your furniture can make a big difference to light levels within the room. Rather than opting for dark woods like mahogany, look for lighter options such as oak, beech, and pine. Alternatively choose high gloss furniture which, like mirrors, helps to reflect light.
3. Install Clerestory Windows
In some situations, it may not be possible to add a full window into a wall space, which can make it difficult to bring in more light. However, there are alternative options, such as clerestory windows. These small windows are installed high above eye level, helping to draw light into dark corners and dull, dim spots.
4. Use Gloss
For stairs and landing areas which are typically very dark, it can really help to paint the bannister and skirting boards with gloss paint which helps to reflect light, rather than emulsion which absorbs it. If you’re not such a fan of gloss, satin and satinwood paints are a suitable alternative, adding just a touch of sheen and shine.
There are many advantages to maximising light in your home. Not only can it help you to create a very spacious, very welcoming environment, but it’s also a great way to reduce your reliance on artificial light, helping you to save money and do your part to protect the environment. There are so many ways to brighten a dark room… it’s just about finding a solution that works for you.
