Burton Old County Court – Transforming into apartments – the design stage
When a historic building can no longer live up to its current purpose and provide the facilities required to serve the publics needs, new facilities are sort and the old buildings are vacated falling into disrepair however this is a good new story as Burton Old County Court was sold by the local council to a developer.
BDS Architecture Ltd were commissioned by the client/ developer to redesign the interior with a view to gaining planning permission to convert the old court house into apartments. An ideal use of the building given the size of the building and the exterior hard standing for parking.
A beautifully detailed stone building dating to back to 1862 will be saved and new life and purpose breathed into the currently empty building. An interesting mix of period room used for the actual County Court and staff offices will be transformed into 9 individual dwellings.
It is has not been a quick or easy journey for the client, however BDS Architecture Ltd has been along side the client all the way, advising the design would work with the existing constraints of the historic building.
BDS also worked for the client to gain the necessary planning permission of the grade 2 listed building. Negotiating with the local council planning officers to ensure and design development would be sympathetic to the existing period structure and historic features whilst ensuring the new apartments enjoy comfortable living spaces.
